Anti-wrinkle injections

Botulinum toxin type A (commonly known by brand names such as Botox, Bocouture and Azzalure) is a popular non-surgical treatment used to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Anti-wrinkle injections inhibit muscle contractions and temporarily paralyzes or weakens the targeted muscles, leading to a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines. Common areas for treatment include the forehead, glabella (between the eyebrows), and the lateral canthal area (crow's feet).

Treatment results in smooth, wrinkle free skin, which helps make the skin look more youthful, hydrated and less tired.

Some people choose to use anti-wrinkle injections preventatively, starting treatments before wrinkles become set (dynamic wrinkles), to minimize the development of fine lines and wrinkles over time. By targeting the muscles responsible for facial expressions, anti-wrinkle injections can prevent the repetitive folding and creasing of the skin that leads to the formation of dynamic wrinkles.

As a prescription only medication, Botulinum toxin type A should be given by a qualified healthcare professional and must only be administered following a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescriber. As I am not a prescriber (yet!), at the Devon Aesthetic Clinic, a qualified prescribing colleague will join our initial consultation and prescribe the product for me to order and then administer on our treatment appointment. This is a legal requirement and anyone administering anti-wrinkle injections should be following this protocol if they are not a prescriber themselves.

FAQ's

How long does the treatment take?

Treatment usually takes 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. I will always ensure there is plenty of time to ensure the treatment is not rushed.

How long is recovery time/ are there side effects?

There is little to no downtime associated with botulinum toxin type A injections. Clients can usually resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure.

Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects typically resolve within a few days.

Is it reversible?

This treatment is not reversible, however it is a temporary treatment lasting around 3-4 months.

Why is there a 2 week follow-up appointment?

As the results of anti-wrinkle treatments take 2 weeks to reach optimal results, it is good practice to have a follow-up appointment to check the results between weeks 2 - 3 post procedure. At this stage, a top-up might be required (although this is not usually the case).

Please note if you cancel the follow-up appointment, it may not be possible to offer another in the 2-3 week time frame and so, the follow-up appointment may not take place.

How long will it last?

This varies from person to person but usually results last 3-4 months, after which, the muscles slowly start regaining their action, and wrinkles begin to reappear.

Will I have to have regular treatments?

Preventing wrinkles with Botox requires consistent treatments. The effects are temporary, typically lasting around 3-4 months, so regular maintenance injections are needed to sustain the results.

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used as a 'one off', to look your best for a special event, however, for best results, I recommend regular treatments.

How soon will I see the results?

Results start around 4 days after treatment, with optimal results at around 2 weeks.
